About Chateau de la Tour d'Aigues
Add to favoritesLocated at the foot of the Grand Luberon, the Château de La Tour d’Aigues is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Southern France. Although partially destroyed by fire in 1780 and later during the French Revolution, its remains possess a striking visual power. Visitors can admire the monumental portal—a true triumphal arch inspired by antiquity—and its vast moats. Today, this listed site is a major cultural hub housing the Ceramics Museum (Musée des Faïences), which pays tribute to the exceptional ceramic production that made the castle famous in the 18th century. The tour offers an "extravagant" stroll between earth and sky. The carved facades stand out against the Provençal blue, creating a natural theater-like setting. Wandering through the terraces and underground rooms, visitors discover the history of what was once one of the region's most luxurious residences. It is a place where stone tells of the grandeur of the Barons of Centulle and the refinement of decorative arts, all within a romantic and spectacular setting.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
Beneath the Vaults: Be sure to head down into the lower rooms and the moats. This is where you can best feel the sheer scale of this fortress-turned-palace. Pro Tip: In summer, the castle hosts the "Festival de la Tour d’Aigues"—a unique theatrical or musical experience under the stars.
