About Chateau des Templiers
Add to favoritesPerched on its rocky spur, the Château de Gréoux-les-Bains majestically overlooks the village rooftops and the Verdon valley. Although legend attributes it to the Knights Templar, it was primarily the residence of the Counts of Provence. This 12th-century fortress impresses with its massive silhouette and crenelated ramparts. Having survived centuries of wars and transformations, it is now a major cultural venue, hosting outdoor shows, concerts, and festivals within its historic walls every summer. The tour offers an "extravagant" experience due to the raw power of its limestone architecture. You reach the castle through narrow, typically Provençal cobblestone streets. Inside, the main courtyard and vaulted rooms reflect its defensive past. However, the main draw is the panorama: from the top, you can see across the hills of Upper Provence to the first foothills of the Verdon, providing a striking contrast to the gentle atmosphere of the spa town below.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
The Golden Hour: Climb up to the castle about an hour before sunset. The limestone takes on honey-colored hues, and the view of the illuminated village is simply magical. Pro Tip: Check the "Soirées du Château" calendar to catch a concert under the stars in the main courtyard.
